Norman Stewart Grandstaff
Ideas Communicated co-owner Norm Grandstaff is the person to turn to for all issues relating to associations and their publishing needs. Norm has been in the magazine and association industry for decades. Norm’s clients consistently become his friends because of the way he treats their publications and their businesses. Clients love that Norm is not only talented when it comes to magazine design, but is also a great source of information about the association publishing industry. He is client focused and puts a high priority on communicating often and well.
Norm has made art a central part of his life since his childhood in the South Bronx, NY. From his early days as a designer and artist in marketing and communications, Norm has been creating beautiful work. He has decades of experience in trade magazine design and production, as well as the association industry in the Washington D.C. area.
Before starting Ideas Communicated in 2000, Norm was an art director at Penton Media, was responsible for design and art at The Magazine Group, and was also a partner at Harris Grandstaff Marketing. He earned his Master’s degree from Georgetown University in Communication Culture and Technology, and a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. He also attended the Corcoran School of the Arts.
Norm has won several awards in print such as the Print Magazine Design Annula, the International Three Dimensional Illustration awards, ASBPE awards, Gold Circle awards, Association Trends awards, and several design awards from publications. Norm’s most prized awards, however, are the letters he gets from satisfied association members, and readers, and the kudos he receives from happy clients.
Chris Grandstaff is a partner at Ideas Communicated and an integral member of the firm’s creative team. When wearing her design hat, she is designing beautiful and current magazines for our clients and creating original illustrations. While donning her business hat, she runs the day-to-day operations of Ideas Communicated and makes sure that all clients are happy and well taken care of.
Chris’s background includes designing work at George Mason University and design and illustration work at Harris Grandstaff Marketing, Freeman Advertising, and Stoke & Folkes Advertising. She also did illustrating at Haft Corporation and Miller & Rhoades. Chris has devoted the last 11 years to magazine production.
Chris earned her Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in Communication Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University. She also has a Master’s degree in Illustration from Syracuse University. Her trusty sidekick, Darla the French Bulldog, serves as company mascot and security system.
If you visited Raissa’s office, you’d likely be very excited by what you saw on Raissa’s computer screen. Raissa takes the ideas that her co-workers and clients provide for illustrations and designs and transforms them into great layouts. Clients are constantly impressed with Raissa’s eye for color and layout, and she is an outstanding designer.
Raissa came to Ideas Communicated from National Public Radio where she worked in communications. Prior to that, she was employed at the University of Maryland and Georgetown University in their public relations departments. She also worked in the art department of WETA. Raissa has won several design and illustration awards and honors, including the Print Magazine Design Annual, several CASE awards (gold, silver, and bronze), and a Real Show award.
Raissa was trained at the Corcoran School of Art right here in Washington D.C. where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in Graphic Design.
